The Great Mushroom Make Off, a remarkable event that saw in total 800 individuals participate in crafting mushrooms out of clay. Hosted and organised by Wot Pots and big team of volunteers, The Make Off took place over a series of free community workshops throughout the last few months
Supported by funding from The British Mycological Society, this initiative brought the local Bristol community together for a unique and educational experience to foster a deeper understanding of mushrooms and their role in the ecosystem. The project was conceived as an opportunity to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in an artistic endeavour centered around the natural world. Participants, guided by expert artists, had the chance to mould and shape clay into intricate mushroom designs, reflecting the diverse forms and colours that mushrooms can take in the wild. "We were thrilled to witness the incredible response to The Great Mushroom Make Off," said Jenny Ashby, founder of Wot Pots. "The project exceeded our expectations in terms of both participation and enthusiasm. It's heartening to see how pottery can serve as a platform to educate and inspire people about the wonders of nature but also bring people together and improve wellbeing. The project showcases the power of art to bridge gaps, spark conversations, and build connections within the local community”. In conjunction with the Mushroom Make Off, Westbury Wildlife Park is delighted to offer visitors a chance to explore the life of fungi in their beautiful setting at a special event on UK Fungus Day on 7th October 2023. This event will showcase the 1000 clay mushrooms created by the community and a selection of large mushroom sculptures created by a team of local potters. The event will also include foraging tours, Fungi talks, craft activities, music and a chance to sample and buy locally grown mushrooms. The day will lead into the evening with a spectacular light display to depict the underground network of hyphae and mycelium. Wot Pots and The Westbury Wildlife Park envision their collaboration to be the first of many such initiatives that encourages creativity, community engagement and environmental awareness. Both organisations are eager to explore more opportunities to engage the community in unique and impactful projects for the future. |
